"Identifying and meeting the needs of customers is key to any successful marketing venture. Many years ago Coca-Cola decided to introduce a new Coke. They conducted research among loyal customers to determine if the new taste would be embraced by Coke customers. The evidence proved that the new Coke would be successful. However, what Coke did not realize was the emotional attachment Coke users had to their existing Coke product. It created a massive outpouring of negative publicity when Coke users rebelled against the new Coke. Loyal Coke drinkers may have liked the taste of the new Coke, but they did not want it as a replacement to what they were accustomed to.

The man responsible was fired. It became one of the most famous marketing blunders ever. However, the story does not end here. The company eventually turned a bad situation into a positive one. Coke ended up having two versions of Coke - new and old. The man responsible was rehired and went on to be successful in the company.

Jesus sought to meet the needs of His customer by ministering to their needs as His Heavenly Father revealed them to Him. Their real need for salvation did not get met until Jesus met a physical need that allowed Him to reveal the true need they had. Some of your "customers" have a perceived need for your product. But they also have a spiritual need they may not realize they have. God wants to use you to meet both needs.

Peter Drucker was a renown management consultant to major corporations and authored many bestselling business books. He suggested three activities that might help busy executives better manage their time.

"First, do not start with the task. Start with your time. Determine where your time is going. Then, attempt to manage that time and cut back unproductive demands on your time. Consolidate your 'discretionary' time into the largest possible continuing time units.

Drucker refers to the second step as time management. After listing the activities to which we devote our time, he suggests that we ask three questions about each of these activities to help us minimize the amount of time we waste: "What would happen if this were not done at all?" And if the answer is, 'Nothing would happen,' then obviously the conclusion is to stop doing it. Next, which of the activities on my time log could be done by somebody else just as well, if not better? What do I do that wastes my time without contributing to my effectiveness?

The inborn reaction is to fuss at the first hint of discomfort and to keep at it until the need is met. Patterns from our old "flesh" nature make this a continual battle for most people, but one that is very worthwhile to fight.

Let's consider the biblical definition of patience. It can mean both longsuffering and perseverance, or not giving up and yielding under pressure. In either case, it reveals itself when we are willing to wait without frustration while suffering or experiencing some strong desire. In other words, we accept difficult situations without giving God deadlines. What's more, patience means accepting what the Lord gives, on His timetable—or what He chooses not to give. The danger of impatience is that we might miss the Lord's perfect plan and His blessing. Only when we trust our Father's will and timing can we rest peacefully.
What causes you stress? Carefully examine whether you are taking matters into your own hands or releasing the circumstance to almighty God. Listen to Psalm 37:7, which says, "Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him." Seek His way and His timing. Anything else can be destructive."

So, in order to avoid work becoming an idol and a compulsive behavior, we must maintain a balance that provides time to spend quality time with the Lord, our families and fellow believers. Sometimes the greatest exercise of faith is to work only forty hours a week. This insures that the outcome of our work is dependent upon God, nor our self-effort. "

Perseverance for Success

Life is a marathon, not a sprint. The race doesn't go to the swiftest, but to those who don't give up. We need endurance in order to deal with the stress of adversity. We must maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get plenty of rest. People give up or give out when they feel depleted - when they physically, emotionally and spiritually run out of gas.

When going through adversity, watch out for pessimists, blamers and toxic personalities. Beware of people who try to talk you out of your dreams and goals. Spend time with optimists and encouragers. Seek out people of faith.

Jesus: The Only Way to Heaven

'While there are many religions, there is only one way to heaven. Jesus clearly states that "no one comes to the Father but through Me" (John 14:6). He used several picturesque descriptions to emphasize this point—He called Himself the way (14:6), the door (10:9), the living bread (6:51), and the good shepherd (10:11).

God does not expect people to follow a ritual to make Jesus Lord of their lives—you can use any words you'd like. However, some biblical elements are essential when beginning a relationship with Him:

1) Confess your sin and admit your need for a Savior (1 John 1:9).

2) Place your trust in Jesus Christ as the only possible Savior, acknowledging that He died for your sins, was buried, and rose again (John 3:16; 1 Cor. 15:3-4).

Be a Servant

Now it is important to point out that being a servant to your employees and your customers does not mean "giving away the store" or going soft-headed and namby-pamby. Not at all. That's no way to serve your employees or your customers. To meet your employees' and customers' needs, your company must be successful. Only successful companies survive to serve.

This kind of servanthood does require an attitude that asks, "How can I best take care of the needs of my employees and customers in the context of a growing, thriving business?" To succeed, use the Jesus model. Take good care of your employees and your customers. When Jesus said in Matthew 23:11, "He who is greatest among you shall be your servant," He made a statement by which any business can live and thrive.'

Fulfilling Your Purpose

You won't throw your entire life off course by choosing the wrong college, job or mate. God is much bigger than any miscalculation or disobedience on your part. Defining your purpose will help you to determine the activities that you should be involved in. Like Jesus, you should not involve yourself in activities that contradict His purpose for your existence. Jesus? purpose was to do the will of the Father and become the salvation for mankind.

Each of us must ask why we are involved in an activity. Is it a God-activity, or just a good activity? Remember, Jesus only did something if He saw the Father doing it, and He was able to see what His Father was doing because of His intimate relationship with Him.

Today, take steps to insure you are aligned with your purpose.'

Cut Your Losses

Can Your Boss Say This About You?

'The Bible says that God has defined the place and time in which we are to live. "LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance" (Ps 16:5-6).

God has uniquely gifted you to bring His presence and power in the area of your calling. Once you begin to realize this, God will use you just as He did Joseph with his employer, Pharaoh. Your life should be a testimony of the power, creativity, and servant-hood of Jesus that it impacts your employer to the degree that he says the same thing Pharaoh said about Joseph: "Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the Spirit of God?"

When God accomplishes this in your life He gives you authority in your workplace. You will begin to see others drawn to you. You may begin to be ostracized as well. This too is part of your call. Do not fear this. Embrace it.

We should not be seeking to remove ourselves from the pressure cooker of life, but use that pressure cooker to reveal the power and grace of God through our lives to others. It is here that we will receive our inheritance as we fulfill our purposes in and through our work life call.

Today, ask God to give you supernatural wisdom and discernment to express the Spirit of God through you to your employer.'

Remain Calm in the Storm

'In every episode recorded about the life of Jesus, when outside forces created tumult, He remained calm.

In the life of almost every corporate manager and executive, there will be times when you feel an "armed" mob is coming after you and your company. Labor unrest, product safety breakdown, critical material shortages, takeover attempts, and the dreaded cash-flow crisis are examples of those kinds of times. That is when the effective leader remains calm and provides effective, positive, reassuring leadership.

Most of us don't inherently have the serenity and assurance to automatically project calm in the face of the storm. That's a characteristic we must cultivate. The most important prerequisite is to recognize the need for this calm spirit. It is amazing how many executives still think that cursing, shouting, and generally running amok are the appropriate and best responses to a crisis situation.

A word of caution, however. Being calm does NOT mean being detached. You can be calm and still be fully engaged and actively involved.

Next to recognizing the need for calm, the most important thing is to plan for tough times. The wise executive will have carefully drawn crisis plans appropriate to the various challenges that might arise. He will also have a crisis team in place, and each member of the team will know his role. This kind of planning helps insure calm all around.

Another useful but often neglected calm-producing activity is prayer. This...might seem a little mystical to the average business manager. But even spiritual skeptics have noted the empirical evidence of the calm that prayer produces. History, too, is full of anecdotal evidence of the power of prayer to help in times of crisis. It is not coincidental that Jesus spent the hours just before his arrest in prayer.

Be like Jesus. Be a calm and effective leader, even in the eye of the storm.

The Lord is not too busy running the universe to be concerned about your financial situation. The truth is, He cares about every detail of your life, including your need for economic security. By heeding His directions about how to acquire and use money, you can experience peace, contentment, and joy.

When it comes to finances, three basic truths should govern our thinking:

God owns it all.
We are managers of His possessions.
